Even at 70 years old shit don't stop for Mulatu Astatke (aka eveyone's favorite Ethiopian). You had the "comeback" albums with The Heliocentrics, and then another very good one for Strut (Mulatu Steps Ahead) and he just continues this late career stretch with Sketches of Ethiopia on the Jazz Village label. Of course at this point he cannot avoid being influenced by himself, and he is going to be re-treading some of his past Ethio themes, but I do think that he still manages to push his sound forward by trying new things. The overall production sounds a little bit modern at times, but it's nothing too abrasive and you will quickly feel that this is a Mulatu record. Can't say I'm all that familiar with the other musicians here (I do recognize James Arben from Heliocentrics), but I have to say that they do a damn good job at accompanying Mulatu with all sorts of sounds. If you're a fan of him, well you also need this one, it's as simple as that!
