The Monteverdi Choir was founded in Cambridge in March 1964 by John Eliot Gardiner. From the original project of an authentic performance of the Marien Vespers (1610) in the King's College Chapel with the aim of bringing the colours and passion of Italian music closer to the audience accustomed to the English choral tradition, one of the world's best choirs has emerged. His repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 20th century, with a special emphasis on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The performance of all his church cantatas in the Bach year 2000 - the "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage" - was documented on 56 CDs
