Johann Nepomuk David is an Austrian symphonist whose music has been in urgent need of revival. Symphonic compositions and sacred music clearly formed the focal points of his oeuvre. Like Hindemith, David found his way around Schönberg and pursued his own unique harmonic path, which was marked by polyphony and strict counterpoint. Our booklet author has found just the right words to characterize it: »In David's symphonic music expressive breadth, quiet festiveness, mild seriousness, on occasion thematic design and character too, adherence to a ›high style, ‹ and baroque forms recall Bruckner; the withdrawal of everything personal also points to proximity to Bruckner.
