Richard Strauss' penultimate opera Die Liebe der Danae has been performed only rarely since its premiere in 1952 - only twenty times worldwide. The actual premiere was scheduled for the Salzburg Festival in 1944, but had to be postponed due to the assassination attempt on Hitler. The composer died in 1949, and his opera remained hidden for a long time. Apart from a public dress rehearsal, he was unable to experience his "best work", which he said he had ever written, on stage. • Strauss's penultimate stage piece for Kirsten Harms was the last production for the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2011. The singers Manuela Uhl (Danae), Mark Delavan (Jupiter), Matthias Klink (Midas), Thomas Blondelle (Merkur) and Burkhard Ulrich (Pollux) do justice to the high vocal standards of the work.
