The present release of the Marian Office composed at the Hamburg Cathedral during the fifteenth century extends the parameters of our Musica sacra Hamburgensis 1600-1800 monument series back in time to the pre-Reformation period. In making this exception our principal consideration was that the innovations in Hamburg’s church music after the Reformation and in particular during its golden age between about 1640 and 1788 would be illustrated even more vividly if we were to include in the series a characteristic work of larger dimensions from the time prior to the Reformation or from the late Middle Ages. Dr. Viacheslav Kartsovnik, a musicologist specializing in the medieval music of Northern Europe, recognized the Historia de Compassione Gloriosissimae Virginis Mariae presented here and its significance as the oldest complete extant document attesting to Hamburg’s music production during the course of his work on a project funded by the Hermann Reemtsma Foundation for the investigation of the fragments of Latin manuscripts in the holdings of the Hamburg State and University Library. The Historia is interpreted by amarcord, an ensemble with a trademark sound, breathtaking homogeneity, and surefire musical style that have made it one of the world’s top vocal formations.
