You won't find many recordings of Jules Massenet's (1842-1912) Piano Concerto, unfortunately he is too much categorized as an opera composer in this country. It is as charming a work as the five genre contributions of his contemporary Camille Saint-Saëns, which are much better known. On the other hand, the two concertante works by Cesar Franck, which have a firm place in the French repertoire of the late 19th century, are a little better off. The Turkish pianist Idil Biret has recorded these works together with the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra and not least because of this inspired interpretation one would be pleased if all the works on this CD could be heard more frequently in German concert halls.
