The wonder pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk, who already toured Europe as a teenager as a virtuoso concert soloist, delivers one of the most colorful chapters in American music history. Called the "Chopin of the Creoles", he was above all the first to capture the syncopated music of southern Louisiana and the Caribbean in enduring works that anticipated ragtime and jazz by half a century. His orchestral works show a composer of considerable skill who was able to create catchy and memorable melodies. This CD of all the surviving orchestral music contains several works recorded for the first time in the composer's original version, as well as the world premiere recording of La Casa del Joven Enrique. •
