Modelled on the great passion settings by J.S. Bach, Stainer's Crucifixion is one of the most popular of all English choral works and vividly depicts the events of the Passion of Christ. Composed for tenor and bass soloists, organ and mixed choir, the piece combines recitatives, solos and masterful choruses, ranging from the graphic cries of the mob "Crucify Him" to the ethereally beautiful meditation at the heart of the work in which God loved the world so much. •
