"love & desire" panorama of passions: "Songs of Love & Desire "was the motto of the New Year's Eve concert of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1998. The exciting program offered some of the most beautiful love arias in the history of opera, selected by Maestro Claudio Abbado. Celebrated singing stars such as Christine Schäfer, the British baritone Simon Keenlyside, the Argentinean tenor Marcelo ¦lvarez and the grand dame of the opera, Mirella Freni, transformed the gala into a festive and moving celebration of voices, the "Libiamo ne'lieti calici" from La Traviata found its grand finale.
