Two highlights of the Aix-en-Provence Festival are now finally available on DVD: Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata from 2003 and Claudio Monteverdi's Die Krönung der Poppea, which delighted not only baroque fans in 2000. Soprano star Mireille Delunsch shines in both works with multiple facets of her skills. • In his production of Traviata, Peter Mussbach seeks parallels to the modern world, especially in the protagonist's fatal illness. Whether consumption, cancer or AIDS - Mussbach, like the American author Susan Sontag ("Disease as a Metaphor"), sees in the fatal illness a parable for sick love. For Mussbach, La Traviata is the story of a dying woman who only realises the love of her life when she is terminally ill. • Although Claudio Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea stands at the beginning of the genre history of opera, the work has lost none of its oppressive topicality to this day. The ominous connections between power and eroticism, conspiracy and love were told by Monteverdi 350 years ago in a historical context a millennium and a half before his time. Klaus Michael Grüber's staging and Marc Minkowski's extremely committed musical direction do the rest to bring the work closer to today's audience. It is also remarkable that all the castrato roles here are occupied by women. Anne Sophie von Otter as Nerone and Charlotte Hellekant as Ottone show extremely remarkable performances in the interplay with Poppea, played by Mireille Delunsch.
