This is the second result of a major project at Vivat. World famous singers will move through "a century of singing", from 1810 to 1910, decade after decade. Each episode will offer a repertoire representative of the period in question. Whereby the principle is to mix well-known and less well-known repertoire.
Especially outstanding on this series are Sarah Connolly's interpretations of Schubert's "Ellen-Lieder", Christopher Maltmann's lively portrait of the "Erlkönig" in Loewes setting, and finally John Mark Ainsley's powerful and beautiful renditions of songs by Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
The vocal soloists are each accompanied by the initiator of the whole series, the pianist Malcolm Martineau. In the detailed booklet, Susan Youens, the song expert and consultant for this series, gives an informative introduction to times and works.
