As the title of this disc (‘And the flower flies’) poetically suggests, my intention here was to treat movement in different forms: the movement of dance, but also that of the lines of ornamentation in the air de cour, which represents a significant part of the work of preparation for this programme. My choices were guided by several criteria: my personal tastes, of course, but also our performing forces in four parts, the desire to vary the rhythms, and the feeling that such-and-such a work would be particularly suited to a specific instrument (musette, flute, lute, violin and so on). The dance repertory of the early years of the seventeenth century was relatively large, but our knowledge of it is nevertheless fragmentary. The principal source for French dance music of the early seventeenth century, which we have drawn on here, is a collection published at Wolfenbüttel in 1612, the famous Terpsichore of the German composer Michael Praetorius, which includes more than three hundred pieces.
