The spirit of dance - from Afghanistan to the New World
Jordi Savall and his ensembles take a world and time journey through the realm of dance music on this CD. Dance music in particular has its roots in the folk music tradition, and this has not changed until modern times, which ennobled the coarse ländler in the 19th century to waltz the court balls.
The journey of this catalogue CD of the label Alia Vox begins in the Far East of the Islamic world, in Afghanistan, to end the oriental part of the tour with the music of the Berbers and Turkey with the dance song of the Sephardic Jews. Via the rich musical landscapes of late medieval and renaissance Italy, the tour continues to England, which under Queen Elizabeth I combined Italian influences with its own folk traditions, and via 16th and 17th century France and Germany, the European part of the tour ends in Spain. The leap across the Atlantic Ocean represents a huge geographical step within the Spanish Empire, where the sun never set. Thus Jordi Savall's journey around the world of dance ends in a musical-ethnological horizon that also marked her beginning in the world of Islam: the music of the Spanish conquerors often combined with the cultural traditions of the Indians to create new mestic musical forms.
