This is the reason why this second CD contains only Suite n ° 3 BWV 1068, while the first offers us the other three. •
The Suites BWV 1066-69 (also called Ouvertüren) and the Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-51 constitute the most popular orchestral pages of Cantor, and the time is fortunately no longer for the performance of these works by modern symphonic orchestras which most of the time disfigured the sound balance. Consequently, it is worth recalling the instrumental composition of these Suites which, by their spirit, nevertheless call for more substantial numbers than those of the Brandenburg Concertos, with the exception, however, of Suite No. 2 for flute and strings, more in the spirit of chamber music: Suite No. 1 in C BWV 1066 for two oboes, two violins, viola, bassoon with harpsichord; let us specify about the "viola" that it is not about the tenor viol held between the knees, nor the viol of love, but well about the viola da braccio with four strings in fifths, similar to our viola . Suite n ° 2 in B minor BWV 1067 for flute, two violins, viola and basso continuo. Suite n ° 3 in D BWV 1068 "with ten instruments": two oboes, three trumpets (trumpets-clarini in D acute), timpani, two violins, viola viola and bass. Suite n ° 4 in D BWV 1069 "with twelve instruments": three oboes, three trumpets (clarini), timpani, two violins, viola and continuo.
